White Space on a Professional Resume: Makes Information Easier to Read

10.05.07 | Comment?

Why people, including many who should know better such as advertising execs, designers and anyone with the presence of mind to research the topic before spending tons of money on advertising, make a cardinal mistake of leaving insufficient white space around black type. Even worse, some of them actually use white type on a black background to try and make their points, whatever those are.

Black type on white background is used in schools because it is simply the easiest format to read.  When the white space around the black type becomes too small, the print becomes more difficult to read.

And when that happens, if the person reading is a hiring manager and the document that hiring manager is reading is your resume, your chances of being considered as a serious contender for the position for which you are applying will drop dramatically.

The point here is, that it isn’t enough to create a drop-dead impressive resume.  You need to make it easy to read as well if you want people to actually read it.
