When You Should Stick to a 1-Page Resume

How long should your resume be?  At one time, the rule was “one-page-fits-all,” but that is no longer necessarily the case.  If you have an advanced degree or extensive experience beyond 10 years, it’s acceptable to increase your resume to two pages.  The general rule is that it should be long enough to entice employers to call you for an interview.Clear as mud, right?  Well, here are some more specific guidelines that might help.  Your resume should be kept to one page under the following circumstances:–You are a recent college or high school graduate, and/or have less than 10 years of total work experience–You are changing careers and have little or no work experience that is relevant to your new job objective–The bulk of your experience, however long, has been with only one employerRemember, a resume is not meant to be an autobiography.  You don’t need to include everything you’ve ever done.  Leave off experiences that don’t fit your current goal.  For many people, one page is sufficient to present your skill set and qualifications, and adequately market you for the position you are seeking.
