Resume Tips

When a Functional Resume Format is Appropriate

04.27.07 | Comment?

Like most questions regarding resume formats the answer can be different for different individuals.  As a general rule however, if a person is transitioning from one career field into another a functional format might be considered.  With the functional format more emphasis can be placed on transferable skills and accomplishments that will have a bearing on the new career field even though they are not directly related.

The functional format should be used carefully and sparingly however, and only when truly needed.

The reason for this is a prejudice that some HR personnel have against the functional.  The reason for this is the fact that it is easier to hide gaps in employment with a functional format.  In the past many people with negative work histories have used functional format resumes to hide their past.  With that in mind a combination format that uses elements of both the functional and reverse chronological format might be preferable.

Consulting a professional resume writer, or a counselor at a professional resume writing service may be your best bet in determining  whether or not a functional format resume is right for you and your job search needs.
