The Critical Technical Competencies That Must be on Every Resume

05.15.07 | Comment?

The technical skills you need to develop for your career will be unique to your field; every job is different, and thus requires different abilities.  However, you should always include your technical skills somewhere on your resume.  These can be listed in a separate section under the heading “Technical Skills” or “Technologies,” or they may be listed as a bulleted item in a list of qualifications elsewhere on the resume.

However you choose to present your technical skills, make sure that you demonstrate to employers in some way that you are computer proficient.  Most people these days are familiar with e-mail and the Internet, so this is expected and not necessary to include on a resume.

Do include software and tools with which you are familiar, both general and industry-specific (only those related to the industry in which you are applying, though).  For example, if you seeking a job in accounting, you might provide the following list of software: Microsoft Office Suite, Lotus, Peachtree and SAP Business One.  You would NOT want to include that you are also familiar with Magic Photo Creator, as this is a fun application that will not be used in your job as an accountant.
