Can you resume pass the “10 Second Glance?” Because employers sometimes receive hundreds of resumes for every job posting, only a small percentage – maybe two percent – will be chosen for an interview. Not every resume will even be read. Most are simply given a cursory glance. How do you ensure that your resume makes the cut?
First, make sure your resume grabs the interest of the reader. There are a number of ways to do this, including overall appearance, format and content. The following are some general rules to follow to ensure your resume is not overlooked:
• Limit the resume to one page
• Be concise; don’t use too many words to make your point
• Use action words to demonstrate your job duties
• Don’t include irrelevant information, like your hobbies
• Use standard 8 ½” x 11” paper
• Save references for a separate sheet to be provided, if asked, at the end of the interview
• Use bolding to emphasize section headings and important data such as job titles
• Avoid using fancy or unusual type and fonts – standard Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica, Verdana and Tahoma are the best
• Proofread!!!
