“Don’t hide your light under a bushel” has always been good advice. After all, if you don’t let others know who you are and what you can do, who will?
That’s why your professional resume should stress your accomplishments and career milestones. For example, if you are a land use planner with considerable water resource management experience, don’t simply allude to that. Don’t worry about sounding like a blow hard. You can describe your great accomplishments in a factual manner.
For example, consider this excerpt from the resume of a high-level land use planner experienced in water resource planning: “Led coastal energy programs for city and county governments, directed environmental reviews for wastewater facilities and clean water, storm water, and administered watershed, solid waste, renewable resources and other environmental programs for city, county and state governments and private sector firms.”
Statements such as these will describe your accomplishments accurately without making you sound prideful. Just write it accurately, say it simply and make sure you include all the great things you’ve done!
