Manual Spell Check Your Resume: Spell Checker Won’t Catch Faux Pas (Like Manger Instead of Manager)

09.19.07 | Comment?

When it comes to a document as important as your resume, don’t trust detecting errors to your word processing program’s spell checker. While it’s always a good idea to run your spell checking program, spell checkers invariably don’t catch mistakes unless they involve misspelled words.

For example, your resume might include the fact that you served as a manager with your last company. If you mistype “manager” as “manger” your spell checker won’t catch the error because “manger” is a valid word, however inappropriate it may be on your resume.

Resume horror stories include some real beauties that came from not backing up an automatic spell checker by checking for spelling errors manually. “Jib” instead of “job’ or “skull” for “skill” for example.

The best method for manually checking for spelling errors is to print out your resume and read it backwards, then have someone else read it for errors as well.
