Key Elements to Include in a Dynamic Cover Letter (Make Your Job Application Stand Out)

If you want to make your job application stand out from all the competitors, make sure to include an original, dynamic cover letter. The cover letter should be specific to the job your are applying for and follow standard business letter format. Using a generic cover letter for every position you apply for lacks originality and will not put you at the top of the application heap.

Here are some pointers for creating an effective cover letter:

  • keep it short and to the point using one page and no more than three to five paragraphs;
  • be original and show your personality without getting cutesy or overly familiar;
  • address your letter to the specific person you want to reach – if you don’t have contact information, address the letter to the department you want to work for;
  • sign your letter in blue or black ink to show it is an original; and
  • use business paper.

Consider what you should include in each paragraph of your cover letter:

  • the first paragraph should include the position you are applying for and how you heard about the opening;
  • the second paragraph should state why you want to work for a prospective employer and what makes you an ideal candidate for the position;
  • the third paragraph should state you enclosed a job application or resume and state your desire to meet with the employer, including day and evening contact information and a question that will encourage the employer to respond, such as a potential meeting date or follow up call.

A dynamic cover letter can mean getting that dream job or still dreaming about it. If you are still in a quandary about writing your cover letter, why not consult with a professional resume writer? After all, an effective resume and cover letter is an investment in your employment future.
