Fonts for Your Professional Resume: Style and Size Are Important Considerations

06.08.07 | 1 Comment

Your font type should be the same throughout your resume; if you prefer to use two fonts, use one for headers and a second for the body of your resume. Switching between multiple fonts makes the resume difficult to read. Use an easy-to-read font, such as Times New Roman, Arial, Verdana, Palatino or Geneva.

Font size should never be less than 10 point on a resume, because 10 point is as small as you can get without being difficult to see – especially if the resume is faxed. Sometimes quality is diminished when a document is faxed, so a smaller font would come out looking blurry.

For the body of your resume, font size should be no larger than 12 point. Headers, including your name, can be larger; a good range is between 16 and 22 points. Your name should be the largest font size on your resume.

Here are a few other tips for resume font:

  • Always use black font
  • Bold or Italicize job titles and other important information, but don’t use these style changes too much or it will distract your readers
  • For scannable resumes, try to avoid using italics and underlining
