Contact Your References Before Listing Them on Your Employment Application

Don’t assume that you can simply list the people for and with whom you have worked in the past as references on your resume and application for employment without asking for their permission first. For one thing, some of those people may have moved on to other companies, jobs or even retired. But the bigger reason for not listing as a reference anyone whose permission you have not yet obtained if simply that you don’t have their permission. In the first place, serving as a reference for another person is a responsibility, and people whose word will carry weight with potential employers don’t take this responsibility lightly.Secondly, some people simply resist being put on a position to provide a reference for someone else, no matter how easy or difficult that might be.Thirdly, some people you may have believed liked both you and the quality of your work may not have been as enthusiastic about either one as you believed they were.If any one of these three classes of individuals is called without permission and without warning, the reference they give you may be a lot less positive than you would like it to be!So be certain that you have obtained permission before you list any former or current co-worker as a reference, or be prepared for the possibility of a backfire!
