A Year in Review, and a New Beginning

by , As the year ends and I reflect back on 2007, I can say that I am happy it is over.  It was a difficult year in many ways, personal and professional, and I imagine I am not alone in being relieved to have survived it and looking forward to better things to come.Having said that, I am also glad for what I have learned throughout the year.  Adversity and change offer opportunities to learn and grow, and I have embraced that part of the process.  I learned to face myself, and make some adjustments, as well as facing some of my fears and finding the root of the fear.  It is liberating and I feel the change in myself. If you are in the midst of change, and not sure what to do or where it will lead, don’t be afraid.  You are not alone, and there are resources available for any kind of situation.  You have the tools to change, and to make good decisions that lead to a brighter future.  If you are in a job search, and unsure of yourself or where to go next, consider these factors for the future:

  • Take time to evaluate yourself, your interests, skills and abilities.  The more sure you are, the more confident you will be.
  • Consider some intangibles when applying for a job.  Research the company, talk to employees to determine if the company, it’s culture, values and approach to business match your own.  A mismatch may lead to disappointment, or worse, another job search in the near future.
  • Evaluate your contributions in the past to assist in determining where you fit best in the future.  If you have been successful in a particular area, for example, project management; consider career choices that involve this process.
  • Try something new that challenges you.  Join a Toastmaster group; attend some networking meetings, whatever it might be to take you out of your comfort zone.
  • Give back.  In whatever form you choose, giving back gives as much to the giver as the receiver, offers new opportunities and lightens life.
  • Update your resume
