How do you feel when someone doesn’t look you in the eye? Do you instinctively feel that that person is trustworthy, confident and has nothing to hide—or does that person strike you as possibly being a bit shifty, nervous, ashamed or even downright dishonest?
If you’re like most of, you chose the second description, which is why you should make every effort to look interviewers in the eye during job interviews.
Looking job interviewers squarely in the eye send the signals that you have nothing to hide, that you are self-confident and ready to answer any questions about your past work history that they want to ask. It’s a posture that tells others “I am who I am and I’m comfortable with who I am.”
Maintaining eye contact during job interviews makes you appear interested in what the interviewer is saying as well. Naturally, you will actually be interested in what is being said, but if you keep looking down or away from the speaker, you’ll risk appearing bored or disinterested and we know that’s not going to improve your chances of being hired!
So to boost your chances of landing that senior level job you want, remain calm, relaxed and maintain eye contact.
