Mulling Over a Job Offer - What is a Benefits Package Really Worth?

11.02.07 | Comment?

All benefits are not create equal, so when assessing a job offer, being very clear about the benefits (or lack thereof) that accompany that salary you’ve just been quoted is essential.

You should consider your benefits package as part of your salary, simply a part you’ll receive in the form of services instead of more dollars in your paycheck.

To make a wise employment decision, you must first asses the out the approximate cash value of the benefits an employer is offering.  If those benefits include medical care, determine whether the coverage you’re being offered is worth what you will be “paying” in cash you won’t receive. You might be able to get the same  medical and dental service benefits at a better price.

Some benefits may not apply to you at all.  For instance, if you are single with no children, day care benefits are of no use to you.

You don’t have to accept the benefits offered, and sometimes negotiating for more money instead is a better career move.
