Unless you are interviewing for a job in a highly creative field, you should avoid overly trendy clothes and unusual accessories for job interview-wear. Your best bet, whether you are male or female, is a suit in a dark neutral color – black, navy or grey – and minimal jewelry.
That doesn’t mean you have to be boring. Show your personality in the cut of your suit, the color and style of your shirt or blouse, and for men, the color and pattern of your tie. Do keep patterns small, however.
While it’s illegal for employers to base a hiring decision solely on the basis of their personal opinion of your outfit, the truth is that you will be judged on your appearance. It’s always a good idea to invest in a nice suit, but an interviewer will care less about the brand name or selling price of your clothing than its general appearance.
Just make sure your clothes are in perfect condition and – it must be said – clean. Don’t neglect your shoes. Make sure they are clean and not scuffed.
Remember, your resume may have gotten you in the door, but you still have to make a good impression in your interview. Your outfit is an important part of that impression, so spend some time making sure you have chosen appropriately.
