Career Resume: The Enormous Risk of Writing it Yourself and Taking Your Chances

04.20.07 | Comment?

Consider the risks of writing your own resume rather than hiring a professional.  You are probably very good at your chosen profession.  But, are you a wordsmith?  Do you make your living putting words together on paper in a compelling fashion, grabbing the attention of the reader?  If you can’t answer “yes” to that question then you should not write your own resume.  Compare it to any other profession.  Writing a will is simple, but only a foolish person would write his own will without consulting an attorney.  Building a house isn’t rocket science, but few people would question the need for professional carpenters, electricians, roofers and plumbers.  Professionals tend to be good at the jobs they do and are worth the fees they charge.

Even professional writers who specialize in certain areas hire professional resume writers when it comes time to prepare resumes.  Newspaper reporters, editors, advertising copy writers, broadcasters, fiction writers, technical writers, public relations professionals and others who manipulate the language for a living, such as teachers and lawyers, hire professional resume writers because resume writing itself is a specialty. It is different from other types of writing, and requires a different set of skills.  And those who are serious about their careers and don’t want to take changes reap the rewards in more interviews and better jobs.
