Body Language is Everything in an Executive Level Job Interview

05.09.07 | Comment?

What does your body language say about you?  In a job interview, hopefully it says that you are a good match for both the job and the organization’s culture.

This is especially important for an executive-level job, because we all judge each other subconsciously based on eye contact, facial expressions and other body language.  You want your body language to demonstrate that you are confident and authoritative enough to handle that top-level position.  Here are some tips to help:

First and foremost, make regular, strong eye contact.   Also smile sincerely – practice beforehand with a mirror to make it seem more natural.

Pay close attention to your posture.  Sit a little forward in the seat during your interview; this makes you appear more interested and attentive.  Don’t slouch, but don’t be too erect, either, because otherwise you’ll look uneasy. Nod as your interviewer speaks to demonstrate active participation in the conversation.  Finally, remember that your handshake is both your first impression, and your last.  It should be neither too limp nor too vigorous.  Have a firm grip, make eye contact, and above all else, mimic the style of the person whose hand you are shaking.
